Week 9 - Assignment 3

PART 1
Based on the perceptual map (below), the competitors are the most same are the three dots in the middle, Kellogg corn pops, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Golden Grahams. These are the most similar because they are relatively rated the same for healthy to unhealthy along with being for both kids and adult audiences. The most dissimilar would be Reese’s Puffs and Fiber One because Reese’s is more for kids while having little nutritional value, and Fiber One being more adults with the most national value.
The two dimensions of the axis selected where adult/child and not healthy/healthy. These were chosen because they fit the best for this assignment to assign the cereals on a perceptual map. There's not a lot of variance in the two dimensions because there was no research done so it was more of an educated guess making some the cereals really close together making this map unsatisfactory. I would increase the explained variation by doing the actual research to increase awareness in the nutritional value of the cereals.
Customers perceive the positioning of a brand amount its competitors mostly based off their own preference and experiences they have previously had. A brand is stronger when it is more widely known to other customers compared to another competitor. The brand that is typically the most loyal and unique in its own way catches the consumers attention and keeps them being loyal to the company. A weaker competitor is someone who has a spin-off cereal of a popular brand. For an example, Walmart's cereal aisle has all kinds of cereal from all of the cereals listed above in boxes and they have knock off cereals in larger bags for better prices but people tend to buy them less. This may be because they want the true cereal they have known and liked more many years and don’t mind paying a little more to meet their needs.

To understand more about why the cereals are located where they are, here is a brief explanation of the choices.
I placed both of the Special K’s near the adult and healthy spectrum because these cereals are typically more for adults and are suppose to be healthier. This same thing goes for the Fiber One cereal except I thought that this cereal was healthier than the Special K cereals. Golden Grahams, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Kellog Corn Pops are all mainly in the center of the map. These three cereals are in the middle because they are for both children and adults. They all three were not that healthy but not the worse cereal to eat out of all of the cereals listed.
Coca Krispies and Reese’s Puffs were the highest rated cereals for children. Kids typically don’t care how healthy or unhealthy there cereal is so they eat whatever they like the taste of the most. The parents might care and influence the child's choice but this isn’t taken into consideration for this assignment. Although I choose Cocoa Krispies as being healthier than Reese's puffs because when I think of Reese's puffs I think of lots of sugar and not a lot of nutritional value. Looking at the dots size, some are bigger than others and some are smaller. The smallest dots represent children based cereals, the medium dots are for both adults and children, with the largest dots being for adults.

I have never used map technology till this assignment. I thought his assignment in particular was creative and a way for all of the students in the class to see everyone's different ideas. I used the map technology to the best extent for the topic being “Best Hikes in North America”. I changed my icons to the hiking icon which was perfect for my map. I also used the lines to roughly outline the major trails that extended over a few states like the Application Trail and Pacific Trail to give my audience a better understanding of the lengths of these two trails.
The story I am trying to tell is very clear since my topic is about hiking. My audience is able to get a short description on the hikes by clicking the hiking icons provided along with a picture. These visuals expand the learning for my audience as well as myself for the research I had to do to provide this map. I balanced my writing and pictures pretty well for this map. I didn’t want to add a lot of pictures but just one to capture the attention of the audience. Seeing the views of the trails can offer a clearer image than what my small description could do.
As explained previously, this map is useful and legibly defined for my audience. I could keeping adding hikes even outside of this project to do for fun- but with the time crunch given this is useful for this assignment. It’s easy to understand the map without having to take the class. Someone who has taken the class could evaluate it at a stand point of the number of people who travel the trails and how long each trail is. This map shows research and information by giving a small description of the text along with pictures. For most of the maps they also have the length of them for people who were interested in actually hiking these trails.
